Paris might have a messed up political/social situation right now, but that doesn't stop it from throwing amazing parties, all over the city, and nearly every night of the week.
Last night we were set to film at a party, which was to be a tribute for Jacques Massadian, who recently died. Massadian was co-owner of Radio Nova, as well as the agents of Jamel Debbouze and NTM. He was a legend in the French hip-hop industry, and helped many musicians and artists take off.
Throughout the documentary, we've all realized that this film making experience has been...a trip. After about seven months of filming and meeting people, we now know so many people from the places that we've done interviews/filmed, and it's always kind a big reunion of all of our new-found suburbanite friends when we attend an event like last night.
I was on my way to meet Barnaby yesterday afternoon -- I was late as usual, so I was walking really quickly -- and I see this guy coming up to me. Turns out, it was Marko (remember him? He did that cool light-painting of me and sandra..). That's when I found out that he got called to do a last minute job at the party for Mr. Massadian to do body writing and light painting.
Anyway, we make our way down to Porte de la Villette to the Cabaret Sauvage, and we head inside. The place is very cool, beautifully decorated, and just has a great ambiance.
Preface to the rest of the story: Jamel Debbouze is my *favorite* french comedian, and my favorite french celebrity just in general. I know almost his entire comedy sketch by heart (not done intentionally, but I've seen it literally about a hundred times..), and I think he's just fabulous.
Anyway, we ran into many of our 'friends' from the documentary, who are all such great people. Marko was there, of course, doing his thing. Here are some photos from that:
Mehdi was there filming. He's completed an amazing documentary on a breakdancing competition in Brazil which just came out a few days ago. He's brilliant.
There were others as well, but I didn't get photos because once we had filmed enough, we decided to stay at the party and dance. The music was great, the ambiance was great, and the people were great. Last night was one of those nights that can only happen in Paris. Here are just a few more random photos from the evening:
